1:1 iPad Learning Launches at WPS

15th October 2013 | Year 1, Reception

On Wednesday 2 October, WPS sent a staff deployment team to the world’s first 1:1 ipad school in Scotland, Cedars School of Excellence, to explore the use of ipads and their impact on teaching and learning. We were grateful to be given the chance to work with Fraser Speirs, and his team. Fraser is an Apple distinguished educator, who works at schools all around the world to enhance their approach to 21st century skills, teaching and deploying iPads in education. You can visit his website at: www.fraserspeirs.com. All parents are invited to attend our very special event on Monday 13 November, when Fraser Speirs will host a workshop at Wandsworth Prep about the Benefits of 1:1 Learning in Education. See an iMovie Trailer we put together of our visit, below: This week, we were thrilled to be able to launch the use of iPads across the school. Both Reception and Year 1 pupils spent some time in small groups working with Miss Melissa to learn more about the iPad, how they can be used, and why it is important to look after them. The children were given the chance to learn more about the different types of apps we will use: apps that help us to learn, apps that help us practice what we have already learnt, and apps that help us be creative. Miss Emma and Mr Matt’s Year 1 art class were the first to take on 1:1 learning for the entire class as they used the app, Doodle Buddy, to create self portraits using a combination of photos and drawing. The children experienced both multimedia artwork and a sense of independent learning as they discovered how to use the camera on the iPad and then use their photos to create new pieces of art on the iPad. All the children were thoroughly engaged throughout the lesson and staff commented how wonderful the app was in sparking the imagination of pupils. We are looking forward to embedding this exciting technology across all areas of the curriculum. Watch a slideshow, below, of the art they have created this week:
