To complement learning taking place this term in Year 1, where children are assuming the role of an events management team, children in Reception and Year 1 took part in a highly enjoyable circus skills workshop.
The benefits of the circus skills workshop were wide ranging. Children and their teachers focussed on co-ordination, balance and dexterity. There was emphasis placed on creativity, confidence and teamwork. Children were encouraged to enjoy the process of learning new skills in a non-competitive environment. Children also enjoyed witnessing their teachers taking part in the event and realised quite how challenging some of the activities are for adults as well.
Particular skills acquired were juggling, plate spinning, devil sticks and tight-rope walking. At the end of the workshop, children were given time to practise their favourite newly acquired skill and present what they had learned to their classmates, accompanied by circus music.
