Maths Week at Wandsworth Prep

17th Mar 2016

Last week was Maths Week at Wandsworth Prep.  Throughout the school children enjoyed a host of activities with a specific focus on developing their mathematical problem solving skills.

On Thursday 10th March we had a visit from the Happy Puzzle Company, with tailored workshops for children in Reception, Years 1 and 2 and Years 3 and 4.

For children in Reception, their first challenge was to balance 24 penguins on a wobbly iceberg; this was a lead-in activity to further challenges. For the second challenge, children worked together to make a puzzle road with no exits; apparently there were 70,000 options!

Children in Years 1 and 2 were challenged to complete a range of mathematical tasks in small groups, such as making a series of castles with bricks, and fitting 2D shapes into a bigger shape.

Teamwork and perseverance were the key to Year 3 and Year 4 solving the challenges they had been set.

At the end of the day, each child was given a voucher with the opportunity to take home a puzzle of their choice to challenge themselves further.
