British environmentalist and adventurer, David de Rothschild, made a special visit to Wandsworth Preparatory School on Monday 10th June to talk to the children about his eco-friendly adventures.
Pupils in the Reception class have been busying themselves this term exploring the environment and the world around them. Playing the roles of Kings and Queens of an eco-friendly island, the children have accepted a mission to cross the High Seas to Quarter Island to solve the recycling and environmental issues of the dragons, witches, goblin and giants that live there.
As part of this topic, the pupils have been investigating how they could use recycled materials to design and make their own boats, involving their mathematics, expressive arts and design skills.
David’s visit follows his own voyage across the Pacific Ocean in 2010, in The Plastiki, a boat made from recycled plastics.
Miss Polly said, “The children have all really enjoyed learning about the environment, and working on designs for their own boats made from recycled materials. It is wonderful for them to be able to meet a real adventurer and expert in eco-friendly boat design, to help them with their mission and to inspire them to continue their exploration of the world around them. We would like to thank David for his perfectly timed visit to Wandsworth Prep and for making a real difference to the children’s learning.”
