This term, our Reception children have been learning about different cultures, traditions and communities from our focus unit entitled ‘All Around the World'. As part of the seven areas of learning from within the EYFS framework, Understanding the World is an important area from which children are expected to develop skills, and this unit has enabled pupils to not only develop their understanding of their own homes and school community here in Wandsworth, but also to experience what life is like in other places.
To launch the topic, our class monkey, Mr Morris, shared his exciting travel experience with the children, as he showed his pictures from his trip to Canada with the Headteacher, Miss Melissa, taken over the school holidays.
The children have been excited to discover and investigate cultural artifacts and items brought in by parents, staff and children, on our class talking table and have been treated to fantastic parent led workshops on Pakistan and France, where the children were able to see photos, clothing and even try delicious samples of foods from these countries. The children are excited to next hear about Italy, Wales, and the USA as the parent workshops continue throughout the term.
Miss Melissa comments, ‘One of the aims of Wandsworth Prep School is to provide our pupils with the skills, knowledge and experiences necessary in order to progress to their next stage of learning as we prepare pupils for their role as global citizens. Parent involvement is a key factor in our 360 approach to education, and the children have been excited to learn from their parents about the many diverse cultures and backgrounds at our school. The All Around the World unit has been a fantastic way of developing our children’s understanding of both the world around them and the cultural diversity within our own school.’
