Superb Sporting Skills this Spring Term

This term, the children up and down the school have participated in a wide range of sports and further developed specific skills which will be used in new sports throughout the upcoming Summer term. Every child has had the chance to participate in different sports and has worked hard to do their very best.

In the past few weeks, Lower school children, especially those in Reception, have been practising their manipulative skills. Manipulative skills involve moving or using an object with their hands or feet to achieve a goal or complete a task. The children have been developing their throwing and catching skills in Basketball which also helps progress their hand-eye coordination which is an important skill for a successful throw and catch.

In Middle school and Year 1, the children have been taking part in small-sided games of Rugby, such as 3 vs 1 and 3 vs 2. This encourages the children to use their communication skills and try to focus on teamwork. It is important for the children to work out how they will use the extra player to achieve their goal (which was a try) and also for the defenders to work out how they will focus on the player with the ball and try to deny them space on the pitch.

The children in Upper school have recently participated in game fixtures, including a Girls Football match and a Mixed Tag Rugby match. During the fixtures, the children looked to use and further develop the skills which they had previously learnt.  In Football, for example, the children used their dribbling skills, passing skills and defensive/attacking communication skills. In Tag Rugby, the children practised how to evade a defender by using their evasive skills, score a try, tag the opponent, to communicate with each other and create a defensive line. Every child took part in the matches and did brilliantly well.

During the Summer term, the children will be focusing on two sports, Cricket and Athletics, and Lower school will have their first swimming lessons. We look forward to sharing more details about their progression in these sports.
