Wandsworth Prep Curriculum Guide

Alongside the Year 1 curriculum overview and timetable, a Whole School Curriculum Guide is now available on the school’s website for current and prospective parents. The guide  incorporates the Early Years Foundation Stage and is designed to provide a summary of the curriculum that Wandsworth Preparatory School offers to children between the ages of 4 and 11. Our curriculum is based on the school’s aims, with an emphasis on learning, wherever possible, from first-hand experience and developing skills, knowledge and understanding in practical and relevant contexts. The National Curriculum sets out the body of knowledge and range of skills covered from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 6, the end of Key Stage 2. In some areas, however, we go well beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum, for example in offering Spanish from the Early Years Foundation Stage and French as a second foreign language in Key Stage 1. In Art, Music and Physical Education, our use of specialist staff means that we are able to offer a programme which exceeds National Curriculum expectations. Philosophy for Children is also taught throughout the school. The curriculum follows a topic overview plan, where planning is based around a main theme. Each topic has a WOW title and begins with a ‘WOW Factor’ to grab the attention of the children and provide a ‘meaningful’ experience to initiate the topic, e.g. a trip, special event or visitor. Six topics are planned per year in Years 1 to 5 with four topics planned in Year 6. Within each topic, enquiry based learning is planned, which culminates in a special event at the end of the topic such as a performance, display, short presentations or assembly, dependent on the nature of the topic. Outdoor learning is a regular feature of our curriculum and is incorporated in each termly topic. Contained within the curriculum guide are simplified versions of our ‘Topic Maps’, indicating the themes covered in each year group. The topic list is continuously reviewed and updated: details of the map sometimes change as our curriculum delivery evolves. While thematic topics vary from term to term, the core skills of Literacy and Numeracy are taught consistently throughout the year. Our system of planning ensures that skills, knowledge and understanding are developed through a careful programme of progressive acquisition.
