The hallways of Wandsworth Prep School were full of excitement as the children waited to take centre stage on National Poetry Day... But the stage was no ordinary stage.
With this year's poetry theme being 'Light', parents were invited for poetry recitals and coffee at the Wandsworth Prep 'Pop-up Light Café'.
Sitting in a magical space, lit only by fairy lights, the children took turns to recite poems about 'light' while their parents watched and listened. Hanging on the walls around them, and completing the Light Café's atmosphere, was an exhibition of 'Light and Shadow' photographs taken by the children themselves during their Forest School lessons.
Morning poetry and coffee was enjoyed by children in the Reception class and their families. The mid-morning coffee break saw parents enjoying recitals from children in Years 1 and 2. The day culminated in a late afternoon coffee and poetry performance by Year 3 and 4. (Parents were even invited on stage to wax lyrical if they so wished!).
Headteacher, Bridget Saul, said: “Our ‘recite to light’ experience really brightened everyone’s day and the children and parents all had a wonderful time. Events such as this provide a fantastic extension to our innovative curriculum. Well done to all our children for their inspiring recitals.”
