Here at Wandsworth Prep, we aim to make all our writing purposeful and have a variety of writing linked to our exciting enquiry-led projects this term.

In Reception, pupils have been set a challenge to try and find pieces of a pirate map by meeting pirates and learning about pirate life. This has included writing letters in a bottle and creating maps.

In Years 1 and 2, pupils have become a company commissioned to set up an art exhibition about the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh.  This week they have been using their speaking and listening skills interviewing Van Gogh after having prepared open and closed questions.  They also needed to polish their descriptive writing as Art Critics need to be able to paint a picture with words.  Their focus on ‘adjectives’ has enabled them to do this.

In Years 3 to 5, we have become ‘The Questors’, commissioned (in our imagined world) by The Enchanted Library that holds every story in the world in their hidden chambers.  They have received threats from Artificial Intelligence who wish to destroy the library to erase stories from our minds forever.  Our team of ‘Questors’ need to complete all of the challenges before Artificial Intelligence in order to get the keys to preserve this library. 

In English, our fortnightly challenges are to study an author and use this author as our mentor when writing excerpts of narrative stories in their style.

We began, through drama, adding words to the picture book ‘Quest’ by Aaron Becker.

This study of setting descriptions has led us into our J.R.R Tolkien Fortnight where Years 3 and 4 have been looking at how ‘Tolkien’ has introduced the reader to his characters and Year 5 have studied setting descriptions from The Hobbit.  The combination of film, pictures, drama and authors as mentors have inspired the pupils to write.  We hope we pass our first writing challenge so we are one step closer to the keys…
