Year 1's project this term focuses in particular on Science and improving the quality of children's writing.
At the start of the project, the children received a letter from the Prime Minister of Indonesia, asking that they investigate some strange sightings on a very remote island called Palu Nati.
Children immediately practised and improved their letter writing skills by replying to the Prime Minister to accept his commission. Children learned how to use adjectives to emphasise the personal qualities they would be able to offer.
Having investigated the island further, the children have found that there are dead birds and fish, rubbish and pollution in the water. The children have been keeping a journal of their findings, enabling them to focus on accurate use of the past tense.
Children are using their scientific skills to find out who, or what, is creating the problems for Palu Nati and are determined to help the animals; this will lead to a 'hands-on' focus on covering the objectives of animals and habitats in the Year 1 Science curriculum.
