Years 1 and 2’s Trip to the National Art Gallery

This term, Year 1 and 2 are working collaboratively on their enquiry-led project. They are Art Experts and are investigating and developing their knowledge of art, art history and how art might develop in the future.

As part of their commission, the Experts are required to put on an art exhibition. In planning for this, they collectively agreed they needed to do some research, so to help them do this, they decided to visit the National Art Gallery.

While at the gallery the Experts saw many famous paintings and learned about different painting styles. They viewed and asked questions about portraits to aid their learning, such as "why do the people in the paintings only wear fancy clothes?" and "why did only rich or important people get their portraits painted in the past?"

The Experts also had the opportunity to take part in a sketching session of a well-known impressionist painting. They really enjoyed finding smaller details to help them scale their drawings.

The experts are now working towards using the history of art to inspire their ideas for what the future of art might be.
