Run up to the big day…

With Sports Day just around the corner, all at Wandsworth Prep have been in full preparation for the big day! Each child will take place in six field events, three are individual and three and will be completed as part of a small team with all points going towards their house total. Next the children will compete in a small sprint competition before finishing with the lower and upper school house relays.

This week, Reception have been focusing on their standing long jump and target hoop event. All children have learnt the correct technique, bending their knees and using their arms to help propel themselves through the air and landing on two feet in a controlled and balanced manner. The target hoop event is aimed to test the children’s accuracy and ability to adjust their throw to land a bean bag into hoops of varied distances using an underarm throwing technique.

Year 1 have been introduced to the ‘Around the World’ event aimed to test the children’s speed and agility as well as teamwork. The children compete in pairs within their house to place as many bean bags as they can into a hoop in the allotted time. Year 1 have also been practising their bean bag balance. This is another one of the team events where the children take it in turns completing a run whilst balancing a bean bag on a tennis racket.

Children in Years 2 and 3 have focused on using the correct overarm throwing technique for the bean bag throw as well as the zig zag agility run event. On Friday the children practised the track events competing in the individual sprint and house relay competition.

With two weeks until the big day, lets hope the sunshine continues!
