Teams from Year Five and Year Six competed along with 16 other teams in the 2024 Bellevue Debating Competition, bringing the shield back to Wandsworth as worthy champions.
Wandsworth Prep’s teams won a total of five out of their six debates; impressively, our only defeat came in a contest between the Year Five team and a Year Seven Oratory Preparatory School team. As a result, our teams had the highest points average of all the teams. Our Year Six team secured the second highest individual points total with 637 out of a possible 810 points.
With well researched speeches for both sides of the seen AI and traffic debates, along with excellent rebuttal skills, both teams won their debates prepared both in class and for homework. Following this, they prepared well over lunchtime for the unseen debate about whether under 13s should be allowed to have mobile phones.
Mr Hudd, Year 6 teacher said “I am extremely proud of the children for their hard work, fantastic focus and the fine spirit in which they competed. For Year Six children, it is a great start to the Summer Term; for Year Five, the challenge is to defend the title next year.”
