This has recently been introduced by our head Laura Nike. After all the hard work from the children, we have two weeks of ‘decompression’ after the interview stages.
Once every child has finished their exams, the learning doesn’t stop but we plan fun activities that challenge them in other ways. For example:
- Travel project – the children carried out a maths project which focussed on a travel proposal. The children had to develop a travel plan using SkyScanner, Google etc
- £5 challenge – the children visited Southside shopping centre with a list of items that they had to buy with their team within a budget of £5
The children were asked what they’d like to do and they visited Starbucks, had a take away pizza for lunch one day and have had table tennis tournaments
Finally, once we know every child’s destination school choice we organise a celebratory breakfast. The waffle breakfast is where the children announce where they’ll be going for year 7.
Preparing children for Secondary School
From spring onwards, year 7 preparations start to give them a taste and a flavour for maths and English in secondary school so that they are fully equipped for the transition. We also organise for the St George’s Hospital worry ninjas to visit the children to give them the space to discuss everything there is to do with overcoming anxiety and to learn tools and strategies to support them in challenging situations and help them make the transition to secondary school as smooth as possible. The children also receive a visit from TFL to discuss travel safety so that children can be fully pepared for independent and responsible travel to school
