At Wandsworth Prep, we believe in the importance of giving children the opportunity to be heard as well as getting involved in shaping the future of their school, local community and the wider world. We want to give children the relevant skills in leadership and empathy as well as broadening each child in their development of our school values. Our aim is to create a positive and inclusive community within the school that prepares children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Our School Council is a student body that is made up of two children from every year group who are nominated by their fellow peers. The nominees work on preparing a speech to persuade their peers as to why they are fit for the role and a vote is then taken, falling in line with our British Values and creating a democratic ethos.
The School Council meets once a week with the School council lead, Miss Kate, who helps facilitate their meetings. Using ideas from the rest of the school, they pick one project each term to work on focusing on either an improvement or enrichment project for the school, local community or an environmental project. The children work together to create action plans, delegate jobs, run whole school assemblies and hold meetings to get their project up and running!
A few examples of our past projects featured within our within our latest news is the Wandsworth Prep Recycling Project’ where we worked with the local council to evaluate our rubbish and recycling, ‘Switch Off Fortnight’ in collaboration with EDF Energy that focused on saving energy, working with Wandsworth Age UK making Christmas cards and singing carols at Gwynneth Morgan day centre and WPS Walk to School Week. The whole school collaboration with these projects gives every child in the school an equal opportunity to get involved and creates an inclusive and nurturing school community.
