At Wandsworth Prep, we believe in a 'sports for all' approach. In addition to the physical aspects, we believe PE contributes to the whole curriculum of a child by offering an alternative context for the learning, understanding and application of language, numeracy and scientific concepts. Physical Education can also contribute to the total growth and development of all children. By participating, PE can have a hugely positive effect on the moral values and confidence levels of children whilst also nurturing their ability to develop working relationships, form leadership skills, function responsibly both as an individual and part of a group, and come to terms with a range of emotions in a number of different situations.
All year groups, from Reception to Key Stage 2, are taught by a specialist PE teacher. Our curriculum encompasses gymnastics, swimming, athletics, team-games, cross country, tennis and dance. In addition, all children enjoy a weekly swimming lesson with an ASA swimming instructor. Initially, where appropriate, the children will use a 'learner pool' before progressing to the main pool.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Years 1 and 2 children are taught to be active and interactive, and to develop their coordination, control, and movement. We provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports a healthy and active lifestyle. Within lessons, children are given the opportunity to work as individuals, in a group or as part of a team. Children develop core movement, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and co-ordination.
Fixtures against other schools take place during games afternoons and are published in advance in the termly calendar. The fixture list for children in Year 3 and above is extensive and offers competitive opportunities for children of all abilities. The curriculum is enriched by after school clubs, such as dance and ballet, where children have the opportunity to gain certificates awarded by the Royal Academy of Dance.
Each term we hold inter-house competitions and complete the year with all-inclusive Sports Days. We take full advantage of being part of a wider group of schools and the Independent Schools Association with the opportunity to take part in inter-School fixtures, festivals and tournaments from an early age.
