Wandsworth Prep School was one of the first schools in Wandsworth to set up its own Forest School. Forest Schools is an initiative which was initially developed in Scandinavia in the 1950s, which aims to increase the understanding and appreciation, particularly among young people, of the environmental, social, and economic potential of trees, woodlands and forests.

To provide you with insight into our Forest School lessons, watch our playlist of Forest School videos below.

The children at Wandsworth Prep take part in weekly Forest School sessions on Wimbledon Common. Learning is brought to life by providing children with real experiences and by making their learning meaningful and purposeful. The aims of our programme are to encourage the children to:

The learning programme follows the children’s interests and lines of enquiry. Each week the children freely explore the changing natural environment whilst the teachers look closely and document the children’s questions, comments, and discoveries in order to set appropriate challenges and arouse further curiosity. Our Forest School ethos is embedded within the curriculum and is not something that is tagged on to the learning experience – the discoveries that we make beyond the boundaries of the classroom will often follow us back to school in both a physical and a conceptual way.

All children are provided with their own all-in-one wetsuit to protect their clothing and to keep them warm and dry in all weathers. On the Common the children are set small, achievable tasks which are designed to reach all types of learners. These might include:

With consistent praise for achievements and for ‘having a go’, children gradually develop self-esteem, self-confidence and ultimately a positive relationship with learning. As the programme continues the children become eager to try new things in an environment that encourages them to make mistakes knowing that they have space to try again and reflect on what they could do differently the next time. In addition to this, the children learn to take risks safely by learning to assess the risks of activities independently.

"My child's knowledge and love of nature and the surrounding world has been encouraged through Forest School and her time outdoors. She has become a confident speaker in front of groups and has developed a real interest in the world around her."
